Having begun this article, I intend to do what I can with it over the next few weeks. Of course, all are welcome to contribute to it. For such a major topic, I would never dream of doing it justice all by myself.
I do not yet know exactly how I will reconcile the chronological history with the thematic sections... a lot of this material might even be cut out entirely to go into articles on the Tokugawa shogunate, or, if people think it appropriate, even into separate articles on Edo period economy, Edo period culture, Edo period society, and Edo period government and politics. Even these four separately are massive topics... We'll just see how it goes. I'm going to leave remarks and suggestions for some key points of each section - please feel free to do what you would like with these, or to ignore them.
Please feel free to contribute in whichever way you prefer - I am sure I am far from the only Edo period specialist here, or the only person with a passion for the period. I will say this, however - the bakumatsu period is a serious weak point of mine, so if anyone wants to write up that section, that would be fantastic. Thanks all. LordAmeth 13:59, 16 June 2007 (PDT)
